Arthur Erickson, the renowned Canadian architect dies at the age of 84 in Vancouver this past Wedensday.I love his work. He's done quite a few inspiring modern structures in concrete, as well as few futuristic designs. You can check out his website here.
And if you live in Dubai, you have a chance of experiencing his work first hand. All you need to do is drive down to the Etisalat building on Al Maktoom Road and check it out. The signature building was designed by him in 1984. It'd be nice to visit Etisalat just for the heck of it, isn't it?

God bless his soul.
was chatting to a friend working at DU today and suggested when they start building their mega buildings they should put a huge cube on the top.. u know.. coz a big ball will just confuse it with Man's building :)
This kind of solipsistic commercial tripe of 1980's architecture was perpetrated in equal measure against societies from Oklahoma to Dubai. These kind of buildings look the same all over the world. This is when you know that it's beyond bad: It's universally bad.
Hats off to a falling comrade.
May he RIP
Excuse my ignorance Dubai; but what's the globe on top of the building is for??
anonymous,
the 'globe' is really a large golf ball for the big swinging shicks of Dubai to practice their putting with.
Although I presume the architect wanted to evoke global reach of telecommuncation etc. etc. and it conceals a transmitter (not any more but the early buildings did)
hala Bu Jassem, it's high time Du had their own buildings. Although I wonder if there's any prime plots left here in Dubai!
Hmmm Nick, let me guess, you stick a Barjeel in everyone of your buildings?
Anonymous, your ignornace is mine. I really have no idea. I initially thought it was a water tank (like the balls on top of Kuwait towers), but they're quite huge for water tanks aren't they?
I think Nick is right. Not sure what the material though. I suspect GRC or some other precast composite.
